TODDLER CARE AND EDUCATION

At Children's Day School, our toddler program is designed to support the rapid growth and development characteristic of this stage, guided by the Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards (CT ELDS).  Toddlers thrive within a structured, predictable routine that balances teacher-guided group experiences with opportunities for independent exploration and play.

Each day includes developmentally appropriate activities, such as morning circle time, math and literacy based small group learning, and both indoor and outdoor play.  The curriculum is intentionally planned to foster early skills across multiple domains - including foundational concepts in math, language, art and sensory exploration - while also nurturing emerging self-help abilities.

Teachers use the Connecticut Documentation & Observation for Teaching System (CT DOTS) to observe and document children's developmental progress.  This system informs individualized planning that supports milestones such as self-feeding, cleaning up after play, following simple directives, and toilet learning.  Through responsive teaching and intentional planning, we create a learning environment where toddlers feel secure, confident and ready to grow.
Toddlers enjoy outdoor play every morning and afternoon, weather permitting.
Toddlers engage in activities that allow opportunities to develop fine motor skills such as learning to grip and write with crayons.
Teachers plan creative activities that are unique and exciting for young children.
Developmentally appropriate puzzles challenge toddlers and promote problem-solving skills.
Children engage in a variety of art activities using creative materials.
Toddlers learn to write using thick writing materials such as crayons, chalk, and chubby paint brushes.
Sensory bins are an appropriate and favorite activity of toddlers.
Teachers plan activities and themes based on children's interests, such as transportation.
Toddlers learn basic foundational math skills such as counting and shapes.
