At Children’s Day School, our preschool program provides a rich, developmentally appropriate learning environment grounded in the Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards (CT ELDS) and supported by the Connecticut Documentation & Observation for Teaching System (CT DOTS). Our goal is to support the whole child—cognitively, socially, emotionally, and physically—while laying the foundation for a successful transition to kindergarten.
Preschoolers follow a consistent daily routine that includes morning circle time, small and large group learning experiences, and a balance of structured instruction and child-directed play. Educators plan intentional, theme-based activities that engage children across all domains of development, using CT DOTS to observe and document progress and guide individualized instruction.
A strong emphasis is placed on fine motor development, with daily opportunities for writing, drawing, and cutting to strengthen pre-writing skills. Learning centers in each classroom—including art, math, science, manipulatives, blocks, sensory exploration, writing, library, and dramatic play—offer rich opportunities for exploration, problem-solving, sequencing, cause-and-effect learning, and creative expression.
Social-emotional development is woven into every part of the day. Teachers use intentional strategies to help children learn to make friends, cooperate in groups, express and regulate emotions, develop empathy, and build independence and self-confidence. These skills are essential for lifelong learning and are critical components of kindergarten readiness.
Outdoor play takes place each morning and afternoon (weather permitting), allowing children to develop gross motor skills, explore nature, and engage in collaborative physical activities. In addition, our indoor gymnasium provides space for structured gross motor games and movement activities that promote coordination, balance, and physical well-being.
Literacy and Math Curriculum:
We implement Foundations as our evidence-based literacy curriculum, introducing children to phonemic awareness, letter recognition, and sound-symbol correspondence. Children begin developing early reading and writing skills, including name writing, letter formation, and vocabulary acquisition.
Eureka Math is used to build foundational mathematical understanding through hands-on exploration of concepts such as sorting, patterning, shapes, measurement, number sense, and rote counting.
Our preschool program is designed to provide a strong, supportive, and enriching foundation—academically, socially, and emotionally—preparing each child for the next stage of their educational journey.
